Apart from the fact that it is not an Rdio or Spotify competitor my primary complaint about iTunes Radio is that it plays way too many soundtracks, compilations, and best-ofs. I think whatever is driving the algorithm is led astray by these albums’ relative popularity. For sure, the fact that a song appears on these sort of secondary releases is a pretty good signal that it is a popular song that people would like to hear. But, when a song is playing, it should play off of its original album. It is downright disrespectful to have a Who song come on and look at your screen and see Austin Powers staring back at you. And why is the freaking Juno soundtrack the designated cover art for both the Kinks and the Children’s Music stations?
To be fair, Pandora also pulls songs off of strange, throwaway albums a lot, as well. But, this behavior is a bug. An aesthetic bug. Accordingly, I have filed a radar which I continue to update with new atrocities.
I hope that this, as well as the typographically incorrect straight apostrophe in “Children’s Music” is fixed by the final release.
